I am also having problems with my c-class and the harness on mine is in very good condition and no visible crack are present in the harness anywhere, have replaced the 9 pole ovp relay and still the same problem vehicle will reandomly shut off as if you just shut key off no hesitation no stumble no misfire just stops running. have removed harness from vehicle 2 times and checked it over for insulation problems and to perform continuity ttest and all passes just this stupid p0600 code for serial comm using my snap-on Ethos. Has me stumped and I am a diagnostic tech.and not a lot of info out there for this other than the ovp relay and the harness.
I just changed the wirring harness for my c220, but the car still displays the same kind of rough idle it had before. I thought this would fix it. What else could it be?
I troubleshooted this problem on my '95 C220 with 300K miles on it. Rough idle, lack of response, stalling on first start...came down to spark plug wires. I don't know why, but it was. Maybe it was arching between wires through the insulation. It's something that is hard to detect unless you check for the resistance or watch it arch in a dark garage or something. Give it a try and see if it helps.
Please forgive me for bringing this old post back but I've read it all and was a bit scared at first with all this wiring harness problems, but then I got confused..
I have a 1999 C230Kompressor and correct me if I'm wrong, but have these wiring harness problems been fixed in cars 1998 onwards? If that's the case, I shouldn't worry about mine?
From what I understand I believe you are safe with your wiring harness. I believe they 'fixed' it about your model year, either after '96 or so after. Anything prior to this date used the 'green' kind of insulation where they used recycled biodegradeable plastics for their harnesses. What happened as you can search for all the pissed off owners was that after being exposed to the heat of the engine bay, this insulation hardens and flake off, literally! You can electrical tape all you want, but it's so severe the only or best solution is to rebuild it or replace it with better insulated wire. I suggest if you're not sure, be very careful in handling any wires around the engine exposed to high heat.
