Reading Engine Error Codes - Benzworld.org

I remember seeing a schematic diagram for a circuit (LED plus resister) to read the engine error codes from the 38 pin connector on a 1994 vintage merc. I do not think it is the ODBII or ODBI connector. I've searched on the web for awhile but can't seem to find the reference again. Can someone provide the schematic and the instructions as to how to read the codes?
