John, having just done it myself on my '91 190e, I can honestly say that it's going to be a big job and a bit difficult at times (especially the R&R of the heater box, in which the actual core is located).
The entire dash has to come out before you can get to it. Just take your time and label anything your not sure of (such as wires and vacuum hoses). You may even want to take pictures.

Actually, air tools won't help you out here. That is, unless you plan on using a die grinder to cut your way through to the heater core. [:D] Seriously though, there will be no need for air tools, the hose itself would get in your way and slow you down. I spent very little time actually wrenching. It's mostly grunt work, finessing the parts and disconnecting connectors, lines, air ducts, etc..
Don't worry. If you have all the parts and tools ready, it shouldn't take you more than a weekend to do it, provided you can spend all of your time actually working on it. I myself, spread it out over a couple of weeks, since I never had more than a couple of hours to devote to it, on any given day and I also installed speakers underneath the dash. Sometimes I went a few days with out even touching it.
I would highly recommend the Haynes manual. Even though the climate controls and consolette are different, most of the information and methodology is relevant. However, I did not have to remove the steering wheel, since I didn't want to mess with the airbag (although the dash would have come out a little easier if I did).
Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask right here.
