When shifting from park to drive, or more commonly from reverse to drive, my 1992 2.6 produces a clunk, actually two. The first seems to come from under the car, and the second, which seems to come a half-second or so after the first, seems definitely to come from the rear. The noise seems to be less or almost absent when the car is warm.
I'm taking it in this week, but I was wondering what's likely making the noise?
I had the same problem. I was originally told it was caused by trani slack due to age. Then because the engine was idling to fast. After the transmission blew a seal and I had to get a new transmission in the car the “clunk went away too. I hope yours is a less expensive fix than mine was. :)
