Power steering pump (???)

how much fluid (and what kind) should be in the power steering pump reservoir?? Also, the upper hose seems to be leaking at the clamp coming out of the pump. What kind of hose do I need for replacement (and how come these fittings are heavy duty pressure fittings??)
Thanx

Re: Power steering pump (???)

If I remember correctly my resevoir had a little pole in the middle that got skinny a the top. The very top of the fat part of that pole was the fill line I believe. My Haynes Manual shows the same type of pole but with markings on it. I added normal power steering fluid to my resevoir because the pump sounded like it was whining when I'd turn the wheel at a complete stop or when moving slow. The whine is not as loud anymore for what it's worth.

Re: Power steering pump (???)

thanx, Nate. Now, my ^&%$#%@*(^) engine has this rattle while idling. I wonder if this is related to loosing power brakes after the car sits in the cold for 8 (or more) hours.

Re: Power steering pump (???)

The two differnet lines are a high pressure line and a return line. Depending on the year of the car you may also have power steering cooling lines as well. A typical problem on this set up is faulty power steering lines that come from the steering gear assy mounted to the inner left fender well. I would replace both lines b/c it sound like you are loosing fluid. Also whne you find out what that rattle is let me know.
Pat

fuel consumption

Actually,my mpg dropped EXACTLY the same amount (rate?) as my co-worker's,who has a 2-year-old Dodge diesel pick-up. He said he drops from 21 mpg to 17 mpg every winter. Also,Iput in fuel conditioner, and car runs MUCH smoother.

Re: fuel consumption

Hey Piotr, what kind of fuel conditioner did you use? (brand, type, etc). I would like to see if it helps mine run smoother. I need new engine mounts, she idles rough sometimes so I have to give it a little 'gas' and when I let off it goes back to idling fine. Thanks

Re: fuel consumption

I'll check, but I got it at Pep Boys. I think it was about $3.99 per bottle-treats 20 gal for cleaning, and 100 gal for every day preventative maintanance. But, they all work, except the really cheap stuff. I'll find out more. Nate, what tires are you using (and the size)? I think you told me, but I'm old and feeble and I forgot...
