Ignition switch maybe?

Today my mom wanted to drive my car, so I let her. She comes back in and tells me that it stalled every time she tried to start it, which was 3 times. I go out there and it starts up fine.

This happened because she saw the preglow light out, and assumed it had preheated. But my preheat is weird, sometimes the preglow light never comes on at all, so you have to keep putting the key back to off (steering wheel lock) and then back to the preglow position. You may have to go back and forth three or four times until the preglow light comes on, and then it goes out because it's ready to start, then it starts like a champ. She saw that the light was out and tried to start it, it turned over but then immediately stalled, or so she said.

Any of you have this problem with the preglow light not comming on at all? And you have to keep going off and on until it finally does come on? I would assume that it something related to the ignition switch. Thanks in advance.

Re: Ignition switch maybe?

Not necessarily. It could be preglow relay, or the whole system. Better go and get it checked. The manual says relay is bad if the light doesn't go OFF. But I had a terrible time starting mine in the morning lately. See if you can floor it and if it still stalls after a few seconds of revving it

Re: Ignition switch maybe?

She says she floored it the second time it stalled... The light goes out when I get it to come on. It's just getting it to come on. I have to keep turning it off and back into run a few times. If I just ran the car when I turn the car back on I just start it up without preheating, has no trouble there. Everything is fine with starting, other than the preglow light not comming on. I should sit there for a while when the preglow light doesnt illuminate and try to start to see if it is heating the engine.

Yeah... Amen to that. I hate it when she drives my car. She's gotten TWO flats and had to get two batteries in her 97 sebring... And it's got less than 16,000 miles on it. That is a terrible track record for her. I am afraid she's going to get a flat and blame it on the car like she always does.
