and my oil light turns on alot, sometimes it turns right after I turn the car on. it turns off sometimes, ive also noticed that it sometimes it turns off as i am going up a grade. dont have a clue what it could be , have checked oil level and just changed theoil, ( about 600 miles on it). any suggestions appreciated
It could be your oil pressure sending unit.
Try revving the engine when its lit,if its goes
out you have a low oil pressure.If not,maybe a
loose connection on your sending unit or the
unit itself is bad.Hope this help.
Manny A.
your 1985 190D should have oil pressure gauge. When your engine is warmed up, the pressure at idle should be at about 1.5. While driving it should be at max (3+). If your oil pressure needle jumps a lot, your oil pressure sending unit is bad ($80-I gave up on mine). Also, I heard that if you do not change two 'O' ring seals during each oil filter change, it will cause all kinds of trouble with the oil pressure readout. Ultimately, you may have to replace oil pump. How many miles on yours?
Also, a question. What is your engine temperature at idle? Or, if you know, at what temp do your fans (the main and the auxiliary) kick in?
thanks for your help...
ill check the oil filter first...
the pressure gauge is usually all the way up when the light is on.
I have 266k miles on mine, have had it for 4 years and it is the 1st time it happens.
another thing is that either fan does not work, does not over heat though, temp is usually around half on the gauge.

it really is not worth fixing all that is wrong with it, just waiting till it cant no more to buy a '95-'96 E300D
Ok,drive on a freeway for 1/2, then stop and idle. Your temp will probably go up. My fans did not work until I replaced the fan switch ($25). However,my temp would go up to 120C after 5 minuts of idling. Now, the main fan kicks in at about 110C (about '10:30' position on the gauge). If your oil light comes up with the gauge on max, then (a) your sending unit is bad,(b) your oil level is low (but you said it's not). Well,it could be a filter. Did you use an OEM part or a replacement? my experience is that a lot of the mercedes replacement and even some OEM nnew parts could be bad. Just guessing, if filter is plugged up,the sending unit reads high pressure, while oil levelin the crank case is low.
Good luck
thanks for your help, didnt have a chance to take a look yet...
also where is the switch for the fan, and where to buy?
thanks again.
-donn
The fan switch is located on top of the engine housing for the UPPER radiator hose (driver side of the engine up front) I think it's the highest switch on the engine. it takes 5 min to replace and dealers have them for under $25.00. Both the aux. and main fan plug into it. To keep the engine cooler I spliced both wires and now both fans start at the same time (around 110C-still too hot in my opinion)
