RE: 190E Six speaker system (Door speakers not working)
Carlsson, I'm a shopper, so I plan to show up with my own amp. If YOU were going to hook up a W140 today, what brand and wattage would you look for? If no bother, give me your top end you would spend/brand you'd go with and your lowest. thanks much. Anybody can jump in here.

RE: 190E Six speaker system (Door speakers not working)
No bother at all, few questions though:
What kind of music you listening to?
SQL or DB setup?
Speaker sizes in W140 (since I'm not very familiar with the setup of this S Class)
Head unit needed or not?
What is you max budget on everything for this car?

Thanks much.
1) Wife drives daily. Mostly R&B and Jazz, When I'm in east coast, hard bottom, old school hip hop and, believe it or not, lotta AM talk radio. (Hey, I can't hear that boom bap all day long. I got financial talk to listen to:)
2) I'm a stereo ILLITERATE[:I][:0)][V] Doh! I can guess at DB, but it'll only make me look dumber. Ha!
3) Everything I know about this system I learned from fellow members on the W140 forum. I'll post THEIR knowledge.
Peter Guenther posted:
a) There are eleven speakers, two each on the rear shelf, one in each rear door, two each in the front doors, and one behind the rear view mirror. There are two more on the dash that were installed when the car had the optional factory cell phone. They are NOT hooked up to the audio system. I was told the rear shelf speakers wer low impedance and wired in parrallel, I have no idea what the front doors are, and the one begind the mirror is supposed to be a tweeter. This whole mess is controlled and powered by a seven channel "Bose amp" over the drivers rear wheel. The radio is a two piece affair with the front being the "control head" the "tuner" is in the trunk in the same general area as the amp. If you contact "BECKER" they will provide$ the code to unlock.
b)floridabenzboi posted; there are (4) 6.5 woofers on the rear shelf.....(1) 3.5 mid/high in each rear door.......(2) 5.25 low/mid in each front door...(2) 3.5 in each front door and (1) CENTER channel speaker behind the rearview mirror. Total of 11 speakers. the bose amp is rated at 280 RMS which means CONTINUOUS. Note that CONTINUOUS is very different from PEAK. The sound is very clean and real with a cd on the 92 and 93s.
4)Head unit not needed, (though replacement would be nice). Previous owner put in a cheesy lookin' Pioneer 50 watt x 4 detachable face. MOSFET (whatever that means[:I]) (Also, note from the above that previous owner also ripped out all rear deck speakers and apperantly had a box in the trunk. Took it all with him, so when I got it, it came with NO SPEAKERS in the rear deck.)
5) Max budeget IS the $650 high-end, and like I said, I don't plan on taking it to that extreme. However, if I took it to them tomorrow and said, "here, do it" with all parameters previously discussed, thats what it would be.

u will need more than 1 amp to hook up 11 aftermarket speakers...
but, i didn't folow this thread very close, can u tell me in a few lines whats happening here ?
maybe i can help
Hmmmnnn... thanks for the reply. Well, in a nutshell, the stock Bose amp on my W140 S-class crapped out - a known problem. I was asking what aftermarket amp would one recommend. Carlsson seems to know his stuff, but also seems to have disappeared. Why do you say more than one? The stock was pushed by one 7 channel amp.
RE: 190E Six speaker system (Door speakers not working)
yes 7 channels @ low impedances
do u stick with the standard speakers or not ?
because sooner or later the rubbersurround will break too...
the biggest aftermarket amps i've seen has 6 channels...
and do u have a headunit with build in amp, and do u want to use them?
for the speakers in the back doors the quality is good enough
the front speakers and subwoofers need an amplifier
do u know the inpedance of each speaker ?
because aftermarket amps cant go lower than 2 ohm

Axel, thanks. Good stuff here. Lessseee...
"do u stick with the standard speakers or not ?"
Yes and no. Standards in the front, and installing 4 Infinitys in the rear deck.
"the biggest aftermarket amps i've seen has 6 channels..."
Hmmmmnnnn... Good point.
"and do u have a headunit with build in amp, and do u want to use them?"
Yes. and yeah, I want to use it.
"for the speakers in the back doors the quality is good enough"
Yeah, the ONE back door speaker, (other is missing altogether) is being pushed by the head unit.
"the front speakers and subwoofers need an amplifier"
Agreed.
"do u know the inpedance of each speaker ?" No, but I can find out.
"because aftermarket amps cant go lower than 2 ohm"
Duly noted.
RE: 190E Six speaker system (Door speakers not working)
so u are telling u have no 2 rear doorspeakers anymore ?
i suggest u buy a new coaxial set, the build in amp of a headunit needs 4 ohm.
so what i would do:
-rear door speakers powered by headunit
-front speakers powered by amp
-subwoofers connected to amp, using two channels, and putting the subs in series/parallel so u get an inpedance of 2 Ohm
this way u get your system powered by a 4channel amp, and 2 channels of your headunit
what headunit do u have ?
and the front speakers, u have 2 speakers each side, are the connected to 2 or 4 channels of the bose amp ? otherwise u can use a passive cross-over, to connect each front side to 1channel, do u understand ?
i suggest u buy a rockfordfosgate 4 channel amp or something, it has build in cross-over for each 2 channels, and they are just gooooood
