I'm interested in buying a 2.3 16V and while I'm somewhat familiar with the car I would like to know if there are any specifics in the way of problems to look for in a used model. Any areas of the motor, transmission (manual), brakes, etc. that are prone to problems? Thanks in advance for the feedback!
Timing chain should have been changed if the car has 90k miles or more. If it's an '86 the tensioner should have been upgraded. I believe the '87's came with the new design. Also check for valve noise and check valve clearances. These aren't necessarily red flags, but you want to know if you'll need to shell out the cash to get them taken care of any time soon. The cams must be removed to adjust valves on this engine, so it's a fairly big job. Good luck!
