Question that couldn't be answered at W124: Key related
I'm from the W124 forum, and no one had an answer on this one. My rectangular plastic key head for a '91 300E is partially cracked, and I'm looking for a replacement. The only ones I found look the same as the original OEM except they no longer have the cool-looking "red buttons" on each side.
I believe the W126 have the same OEM keys. Where can I find the replacement key heads that look exactly same as the factory key heads?
I still have the original OEM keys with the red buttons. Do these red buttons come off easily so that I could use them on the new replacement part?
I thought that the red spot keys were the ones that went with the factory alarm systems. The keys themselves didn't have any electronics like the new transpoder keys, but it just denoted that the car had a factory alarm system. When you lock the car with the red dot key, it arms the alarm system and if a different key is used to unlock, such as a valet key or other spare, the alarm will be set off since they lack the extra notch to trip the microswitch in the door tumbler.

Thanks for the pic. Mine looks just like the 95 E320. Where do I get a replacement like that?
AFAIK, when keys are ordered from Mercedes (via the dealerships), they can cut either the master or valet keys, but the master keys no longer come with the red spot.
