Looking at buying a low mileage automatic 1985 190e 2.3. About 80,000 miles.
Very nice inside and out with just minor cosmetic problems (antenna and tint)
What would be the first things the forum would look for as far repairs or repairs needed in the very near future?
before you buy car, after you test drive it pop the hood and remove oil cap and check under cap and if there is some white stuff mixed with oil dont buy it.it means that motor overheated at sometime and some water is in the oil system head gasket bad etc.remember you need to test drive car first before you check motor
If you are not too mechanically inclined and don't know these cars, I would suggest finding an indy MB shop in your area to complete a pre purchase inspection.
these are great cars but the last thing you want is to buy someone else's neglected headache.
1. make sure the car isn't warmed up when you test drive it.
2. Take a mechanic to see it before you pay. If you can't make arrangements with your mechanic take it afterwards for a full check of everything:FIRST you must check to make sure your head gasket isn't leaking, wet/dry compression test, cracking compression test, coolant pressure test, test drive,
What i did was type all of my concerns on a computer and printed it out and gave it to the mechanic to read when they look over the car.
3. Ask for a record history
4. First things you need to do before you repair when you get the car: Fuel pump/ filter, timing chain/ chain tensioner (at the same time), valve adjustment, water pump.
