DIY Mercedes W201 190 Front and Rear Suspension including springs shocks struts

REAR SUSPENSION

First you will need to jack the car up and put it on a jack stand and remove the wheel. On some models you will also have to remove the plastic cover for the bottom arm, which is held on by 4 10mm bolt, arrowed 1 and 2 with another 2 on the other side of the arm

to change the shock undo bolt A,which is a 17mm head and nut, then undo bolt E,compress the shock and it comes out.

to remove the spring, put the jack under the bottom arm and raise it a little, then undo and remove the bolts in above diagram A=17mm B=13mm and C = 22mm

once you 've done that lower the jack and it should look like the picture below, push down on point D and the spring will literally fall out.

replacement is the reverse of removal

FRONT SUSPENSION

1) jack the car up and place it on a jack stand, then take the wheel off

2) to remove the strut, loosen and remove the bolts A,B and C which are 19mm,then loosen nut D using a 22mm wrench and (depending on make of strut) 7 or 8mm allen key, the strut is now ready to remove, you might have to push the strut up a bit to compress it enough to get it out, replacement is reversal of removal

To remove the spring

1) same as step one above

2) place the spring compressors on the spring as in the picture and tighten them up,now it is very important you do this evenally otherwise they could spring off and cause injuries.

3) once the spring compressors have been tightened up, this on other cars would be enough to get the spring out but on 190's the springs are so long and unless you have the proper mercedes spring compressors, you can't close the spring quite enough to get them out so
insert a long strong bar in between the the bottom arm and chassis marked ( 1) in the picture,at this point another to give you a hand would be press down on the bar (2) and use a screwdriver at point (3) to help pry it out, again fitting is the reverse of removal
