It is an interference motor.

In my humble opinion, buy the car!

Get the motor refurbished and do the various parts replacements to bring the car up to full roadworthiness.

If the chain snapped while the motor was turning, there's no doubt about there being damage, but the real question is "how much & to what?"

That can only be answered by removing the head, taking inventory, pricing parts and consulting your wallet.

If you want a complete rebuilt engine it's like $3K
Mercedes Benz Engines

A cylinder head for a 2.3 16 V is $1295.00

The 102.983 isn't on those lists.

Wait. We're talking about several of the valves and some of the pistons right? I do not remember whole heads splitting and blocks breaking off.

Right?

When a piston hits a valve, it can also ruin perfectly good valve seats, guides and if there's debris from the contract, then there's a good chance of metal getting smashed into cylinder walls and the like. It's not just "valves and pistons."

Right?

But isn't the severity of the damage dependent upon the math of the motor and large displacement Benz motors are less prone to such a cascade of destruction.

Right?
