It seems like it is strut mount season. I'm in the middle of the same job and facing same problem with that flange sticking up. The solution I chose initially is a large 3/4" washer. That makes for solid attachment although the plate sits pretty high in the front and back (but does the mount really deflect that much?).

The more I think of it, the more I like enlarging the hole in the top plate washer as Cypress suggested. I had considered just filing off that flange to make it like the OE but that flange does make for a larger contact area for the strut shaft. I'm not sure that it will make an obvious difference but the concept seems good. Enlarging the hole in the plate isn't much more work than filing the flange off. The only downside I see is that if the next set of mounts does not have this flange, the top plate washer will have too large of a hole and need to be replaced. It's not that big of an issue.

I think I will sleep on it and probably do some drilling tomorrow.

The tightening torque on the three mount bolts is only 20Nm which isn't much. There is not much force pulling down them and pretty much just holding them in place. My guess is that they are more likely to break from accidental over tightening than from road use.

Good luck to all of us,

Colin

Actually I am just realizing that those "new" mounts have a high sleeve for a different kind of pressure/limiter plate washer. I think the seller should have disclosed of this and offered the washers with the mounts. There is simply NO WAY that they would worked with a default standard set up.
I looked at Febi and others and seen some with exactly the set up that I had originally and some with the lip sticking out but offered with there own washers that go OVER that lip so that the strut threads at the end are protected.
The problems that I have now, even if I try to use them again they are both SHOT. One has a broken screw which like I was told and I think is possible I could pop from the old one and force it in there. The second problem is more critical because the center sleeves are now loose were they spin in place and can also travel up and down. I don't think that's a good thing but I could be wrong and that's the way they are supposed to work.

So today I drove the car to work with the "old" strut tower mounts and boy is it wobbly
I am going to order another set from Germanstar this time. I might as well go for front brake disks and bearings too just in case those bearings are what make the car howl like a hell when I step on the gas. Yeah, today I tested the car for 100+ mph but had to throttle back because I could feel the wind (it was gusty) knock the car around. I guess I am spoiled from the 560SEL staying steady at those speeds but I am very impressed that a four cylinder engine can reach these speeds with ease. I guess I will try high speed after I install the "proper" mounts and hopefully a new set of of front wheel bearings will make the ride much quieter too unless I have a messed up rear dif. or center bearing.
