1991 2.3 102 head removal questions

I am currently working to remove the cylinder head on my 2.3 to check for the leaks per my previous thread. Doing this for the first time, I must say that this is not an easy job. Many issues have developed along the way. From frozen bolts/nuts to stripped threads to connectors breaking during removal. Also the service manual is not as complete as it should be.
A few questions:

The manual indicates that the head be removed with the exhaust and intake manifolds attached. I appears to me that at least the exhaust manifold could be left in the vehicle and save the removal of the egr, dip stick, and O2 sensor, and the additional weight of the lifting it out. Why is it recommended this way?

I don't have a gantry crane to lift the cylinder head off the block.

If anybody had done this job before I would be interested in any shortcuts.

Thanks, JM

I Just took mine off.

I removed the intake manifold and and I wanted to remove the exhaust manifold as well.

But like you said it's difficult with frozen bolts and such.

Anyways I was able to get the head off with the exhaust manifold attached. I removed the bolts from the Y pipe ( 4 of them)

The most difficult time I had was removing those pressed pins for the timing cover.

Cheers and good luck.
