We're all quite excited also to see this project done. We are one step closer today.
The second grab bag of parts arrived from Paul at Helms. When the glass comes, the whole car will be reassembled in one pass. Just before cladding and badges, the body will undergo a final wet sanding with fine grit paper followed by the polishing foam and compound. Deen uses a three step foam pad process with ever finer polishing agents. At six months, the car will get its first buff out.

2.3-16 3M Rubbing Compounding
The car is being compounded clockwise starting from the trunk lid.
In the top photo, I am trying to reveal the coarseness of the metal flake of the paint on the port side C pillar. I will try my best to have a finely focused photo of the metal flakes. They are huge.
In the second photo, I am trying to show the depth of the finish after polishing. You can see the team member's reflection in a lustrous finish.
The third photo reveals the port side trunk lid, its accurate reflection, its course flake and the ripple free surface. The paint goes from black to blue-gray in bright light, just like the original finish.

2.3-16 Port Side Compounded
The port side is compounded.
The port front fender shows the level of depth and shine I am looking for in this car.
Photo 3:
The only paint error I see so far in the port side is a discontinuity in the mid rear door. It appears as a narrow bump in the reflection above the crease that runs under the door pull. I put a white circle at the spot where this is located.
Photo 4:
The only metal prep error so far appears on the hood at the port forward area in the white circle. The metal flexes a little under the weight of the rotary buffer, but there is a slight discontinuity in the reflection at that spot.

Sure.
I can even show you the compound the team is using.
That hood alone took more than an hour of compounding. The port side was done first followed by the starboard. This was after wet sanding for an hour to get the flattest finish. The foam polishing head does not leave swirl marks.
We are at the seven day mark from completion and exhibition of the car minus antenna and blower.

Ripples
This sequence shows the results of the pains taken to avoid ripples.
At obtuse angles approaching 180 degrees and at very close distances, a ripple effect is perceptible. However, at more normal viewing angles and distances, there is no perceptible ripple effect.
Also, the Spies Hecker clear is so thick and lustrous that it appears to encase the metal in a cocoon of color and already after only the rubbing compound. There are still two more polishing steps left.
Tomorrow we finish the compounding and move on to glass and their seals.
you should really get a new camera before this process ends. your current camera does the car no justice. post # 346,7 and 8 shows the cameras deficiencies clearly. id suggest getting a new canon.
