It's back to Dorgler. The car has a failed clutch slave cylinder. A new one is on the way. Also, all rotors and pads are going. I am also investigating a new radiator and water pump.
Paint is on hold a few days.
I will thoroughly road test the car to allow any other failure to occur. Once those kinks are worked out, then we'll paint with 199. Otherwise, I'll have a beautifully repainted 16v and then get splotches, grease and scratches/nicks on the new paint from other minor repairs.

Sorry. I did not imply that taking the 16v back to Dorgler was a bad thing. It is a very good thing. We have a 22 year old vehicle that appeared on the scene in its original form. Even its brake fluid was original. Many parts had to go because the objective was to restore the car to full roadability, not just museum visibility. Two of those parts are the slave and the brake hardware. Also, Dorgler will find the creeking sound in the rear.
These failures are anticipated and sought after. I test the car in a real world environment. Something is supposed to fail and when it does, it gets replaced and repaired.
I also apologize for coming on a bit too strong about the motor. It is way more mechanical sounding than my 8v and my GL450. The 8v has a bit of a throaty sound and the GL450 you can hardly hear running. The 16v is nearly identical to the twin cam 280 six cylinder motors of the 70's. It's "mechanical" and the exhaust is turned up to sound like a baritone cricket.
In the end, the 16v is coming along and the list of repairs remains at clutch slave cylinder, blower, antenna, rear suspension creek, rotors and pads, radiator and water pump.
I'm just wondering, with as many issues that you have revealed in this thread, if there is some association that you can report abused vehicles to. The PO, although you explained his demise, probably died from the same neglect that this car has had. Perhaps his family/relatives gave the care to him in the same manner as the car. JMO

Sort of like a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Cars?
That would be tough. How do you tell if a person abused a car or mother nature abused it?
As to all the issues I reported here, remember that I said initially I would be brutally honest. I am detailing everything - perhaps to the exclusion of the tiniest clips and bolts.
This means that I do not hold responsible the previous owners because their standards of car maintenance likely do not approach mine.
I went to night classes in an auto school in Germany and our car of choice was the Mercedes. So I catch the smallest failures and fix them on the spot. That's why my 8v is still with me.
There will always be issues because I will use the car as if it is fully roadworthy and the intent is for every gremlin to reveal itself to be repaired and restored.
It is a museum piece of living automotive history and it happened by the right owner who will care for it the way it deserves to be treated.
Its faulty slave was removed today and a new one is on its way.

The seals in the slave cylinder failed to hold clutch fluid pressure after 22 years of atrophy.
A new slave cylinder is now installed in the car and the clutch works normally.
The car awaits a shipment of brake rotors and pads (and sensors).
Dorgler says that no new cooling system parts are needed. The waterpump and radiator are new and the coolant appears to be clean. Dorgler will check the alternator and will check the power steering system to see if either component is not operational under ordinary driving loads.
So what are your plans for this car? Is it going to be put in storage and taken out on weekends? Judging by some of the things you said earlier, I don't think you'll make it an everyday car.

The goal is to maintain this piece of automotive history in substantially new condition. So, I'll be using it on weekends and taking it to shows. It will be an ongoing work in progress to keep it clean and fully operational.
