I'm about to buy a 1988 190E2.3-16V RHD, the car is in decent condition & running. I want to bring it back to its original condition but unsure if MB still sell the original parts (mechanical, body & interior). But by reading your posts, dealers in US seem to still carry the parts, is this still the case?
TIA,

As far as the 1980's are concerned, the only "part" that is "discontinued" is carpetting for the transmission hump and the rear footwells. Here, the only dealer option is to upgrade that carpetting to a later year and a different weave.
Otherwise, the message I am getting from my nearly daily trips to the parts department is that all parts are available for the 1986 2.3-16. I was able to get hoses, clamps, filters: anything I wanted.
Many parts have to be brought in from Germany, so I imagine you would be able to get nearly any part you need through your dealer.
Thanks for you reply. So getting engine & tranny parts won't be a problem then? My vision is to have it repainted the body in brilliant silver with euro headlamp & the wheels (evo II already comes with the car) in gun-metal.
I'll post as soon as I have the car & probably start asking tons of questions.
I love 2.3-16V when I first saw it 1988 but couldn't afford it (around $35K brand new in US) but it still looks as good today, IMO.
Not all parts are available, even from Germany, however since the W201 now has "classic status" there is hope that for those parts that are no longer in stock, the Classic Center can obtain or make them.

The word from Esther is that the fuel delivery system from the tank through to the fuel distributor is gunked up and corroded.
Val will determine the nature and the extent of the repair tomorrow: whether the gas tank has to be dropped and cleaned and whether all fuel delivery components have to be replaced.
I will opt for replacement from bow to stern of anything not perfectly operational.

This post signals roughly the half way mark that the 16v has been at Helms.
At this point, all systems on the car are a go except for fuel delivery.
This means that another parts order is outbound to Germany for everything between the fuel tank and the injectors. The corroded and gunked up fuel lines will all be replaced. The fuel pump will be replaced. The accumulator and the fuel distributor will be replaced.
There is nothing further to update until the point that the car has had all these parts installed and calibrated.

Hit a huge snag with the portions of the carpeting that cover the transmission tunnel and the rear footwell areas. These are molded carpet sets in anthracite that are available absolutely nowhere.
Option one is to go outside the original manufacture of the vehicle and slop in box cutter carpets with padding and glue.
Option two is to remove, launder/clean the carpets and touch up the inside belly metal and reinstall the original carpets.
The goal is to as large of an extent as possible keep the car original. Already gone are the tires, front carpet pieces, hood, grill with star, all cooling system hoses and overflow tank with cap, caliper anti-rattle spring, rear engine padded bulkhead, engine splash guard, serpentine belt (and the rest of the grab bag items), and now the fuel system between the tank and the injectors. The paint will go soon too.
It still has its original distributor cap and rotor and front break pads!
Otherwise, the motor is adjusted and passes Val's inspection as does the entire drive train, all suspension and all engine ancillaries. Keep in mind the car passed its New York inspection and is titled and registered.
We're looking at possibly a 95% original and fully roadworthy vehicle from 1986.
Esther reports that the fuel tank will be dropped next week for a cleaning.
