Restoring an 8,000 Mile 2.3-16
Here follows a thread on the restoration of the 8,000 mile 2.3-16.
I will be honest and detailed in this thread. All will be informed and all please chime in with opinions and advice. I have not restored a Mercedes in a few years.
The factory freshness appears throughout the car. The NAM headlight basket on the passenger's side still has the shine from the assembly line. The hood is released and the upper ridge of the basket is visible: clean, straight and beautiful.
The cassette holder fits into the console tray just to the rear of the shifter.

The story goes that this car was owned by a guy who died shortly after buying it. Then the car was in storage for 22 years, recovered last year and put up for sale this month.
The vehicle is a victim of vandalism. The hood star is clipped off, the chrome grill was kicked on its starboard side and the grill strips were damaged. The hood appears as if someone stood on it and stomped their feet.
Vandalism dents appear throughout the car. Key scratches appear throughout.

The vehicle suffered flooding early in storage.
Although the interior is bone dry, it is obvious that water entered the passenger compartment on the vehicle's port side toward the front.
This is corroborated by the atypical rust patterns under the hood. The exhaust camera is coated with an ultralight coating of rust, but other bolts are well coated in deep particulate rust. Noxon (oil free metal polish) removes this rust.

BTW nice car, definitely a good find
Thank you.
The EHA is out and there is air in the fuel system. The OVP is out: the ABS light is on, the radio has four bars across its screen and the antenna is out. Alternatively, the ABS light may be on because the connecting cable that runs through the steering wheel boss and connects the airbag bushing ring is defective.
The right rear window does not work either at the shifter console or the door switch.
There are no other electrical errors apparent inside the vehicle.
