2.3-16 Tidbits in the Paint Booth

Inside the paint booth this afternoon, the cladding was painted, wet sanded and then painted again.

These photos show the parts after the first coat was applied and wet sanded. The body man is checking for errors and filling with material where necessary.

You can probably easily identify each part.

Hi.

It will be a while because every piece gets careful attention, repair and repaint. We put together the best skilled professionals to do the best they can and this thread shows their work. We also are using the finest materials and original Mercedes parts supplied by Paul at Helms Brothers. Not one clip is not original Mercedes.

I am also taking time to put together photos and explanations that will entertain and delight. This is supposed to be an enjoyable experience with a few laughs and tons of inside information about the 190E model.

It is a cool car that was dealt a cruel blow. It was left alone for two decades unwanted and unloved. It woke up to a whole new generation and was vandalized: like Rip Van Winkle waking up and getting belted with a stick.

The first photo is initial arrival of the car from the seller. It looked pathetic. The second photo shows that upon close up review, it is a brand new car. The third photo tends to indicate that there is plenty ahead to restore it. All in all, I was sad when I first brought it home.

This car will never look pathetic again.

My job is to dress it up a bit so it can be part of the scene and maybe more - to be admired as a trend setter and role model for the generation of sports sedans it helped inspire and now finds itself among.

Oh by the Way, a 1992 W140 300SD

As work on the 2.3-16 winds down, meaning that after glass, paint and reinstallation of the plasticwork, the team is starting on a majestic 1992 W140 car. Its owner was floored by the 16v and asked Deen for a job on his car. It's a six cylinder diesel with a few hundred thousands miles on the clock. It will be painted in its original color.

Photography Sony

As a side note, all photos in this thread are taken by a Sony FD-92 1.6 megapixel digicam.

I chose this old model because it has an enormous depth of field and a crisp, noise free picture. Most important is its excellent rendition of color in all lighting situations. This means you can see the car in its correct color under shop lighting. Add to that the sharpness and detail, this camera was the only cogent choice.

After the photos are dumped from the stick, Windows photo editor shrinks each image 45% for uploading to Benzword.

2.3-16 Paint

Today, the car spent its last day in the rough. The first photo shows the final steps in taping the car for the paint booth.

The can of paint came in from the Spies Hecker supplier. Deen discovered that the reducer already has the hardener in it, so the mixing was one easy step.

We realized the paint is a slower curing paint. This means the finish will be a bit more durable than normal refinishes. It also meant that spray times increased dramatically allowing for greater attention to be made to on the fly error correction. There was one spot the team missed at the starboard rear taillight opening which was fixed right after the first coat.

The coats go on slow and easy and drying takes more than twice the time of other paints.

But the finish is excellent.

The entire afternoon was spent on numerous passes,

Clear to go on just before the shop closes for the day.

2.3-16 Paint

By the fourth coat of the base color, the car takes on a supercar tone.

2.3-16 Paint Shoot Nearing Completion

The sheen comes from four coats of color and two of clear.

The hood is restored to its correct shape as is evident from the luster.

The direct on view no longer looks pathetic. We'll have that grille and star back on in a few days.

The trunk lid is back to excellence. It's badging will be attached shortly.

The roof to the rear of the sunroof opening is smooth and correct.

The port front fender is clean and straight with all prior scratches gone to the wind.

The shine is powerful and the metal flake paint brought back the beauty of the lines of the car.
