I hooked the speakers up to my Nakamichi for now, and they can really kick, i get a solid ~80RMS on even the most demanding tracks. (Tiesto, Benassi, etc..)
I didnt want to cut the rear deck, so i simply bought some industrial strength velcro from home depot, and velcro'ed an 18cm baffle onto the opening, and velcro'ed the speaker onto it. I'm thinking i'll get black sued and redo the entire rear deck, so it matches up.
I'm still working on the grills, i like what Kynyption posted with the picture frame kinda grills. I think i'm gonna do that. But that can wait, i want functionality first.
I'm still putting away the pennies for my Kenwood DNX7100, but until then i'll pick up a $20 preamp and use my old mp3 player.
Now i got to figure out where the fuk, i'm gonna put the amp? I'm thinking under a seat or something, or mount it under the medkit box, will have to see when i get it next week.
Finally! had the cash to put new sound in the benz.
So far I got: I hooked the speakers up to my Nakamichi for now, and they can really kick, i get a solid 80RMS on even the most demanding tracks. (Tiesto, Benassi, etc..)

COOL SPEAKERS! I love those huge home stereo systems (have an ancient early 80s Luxman tuner/pre-amp/amp/equalizer with Polk Audio 2 x 200 W 3-way main, M&K 2 x 80 W 2-way tweeters and a bad ass M&K 500 W woofer. The Prodigy makes the living room shiver.
Nice set-up too - always wanted to do that for my old W-201. Whatever you do, NEVER mount the amp under the rear seat. MB tried that with the W-140 amps and the things melted away. Would suggest to mount it under your med box. Even better, just toss that plastic insert, cut out some ventilation ducts, cover your rear deck and mount it directly underneath.

Amp: Nakamichi AV-7 (real one, designed by Nikko himself, before Nakamichi became American)
Speakers: Tannoy Mercury Shadow M5 floor standing speakers (about 100RMS)
SUB (covered in that white blanket): SVS PB12-Plus2 (about 600+RMS)
yeah, its not like i'm gonna need a medkit.
That setup in the pics is:

Cost about $6k
6K, WOW! Savaged my set from a friend's garage (his wife wanted to dump it).
US 150.00 for everything. I have seen a used Luxman M120-A on E-bay for US 225.00. Just the amp.
hey i didnt screw up the car install dammit! its work in progress!
and yes, i'm an audiophile, to put it into benz terms... my home audio setup is like a C63 AMG, which obviously means, its the best-cheapest option. On descent audio, people can spend $10-15k easy.
Component amplifiers are much better than integrated ones, for the most part at least. That is, having a separate preamp, and poweramp is better than having everything in one box. I'm looking at about $8k to upgrade my setup, (going Rotel components, straight from Japan), so i'm holding off on that as much as i can.
The grills for the car are a little complicated. I bought some quarter cut circular pieces and tried to make a frame, but the rear deck has a lip at the end, so the frame does not sit properly on it. So i'm scrapping the picture frame grill idea. Instead, i'm gonna cover the factory grill with cloth and wrap it over the baffle.
Those speakers were too big to put into the pods, If i wanted to cut it, i would need to remove quite a bit of plastic, and it would probably break, or vibrate. And i'm not going to use silicon sealant on my speakers. The cut out diameter is 13.8 cm
