CA Smog and a 2.6

I picked up my first w201 recently. I have a w126, but its diesel so the Mercedes gassers are pretty new to me. I have a VW with CIS injection so I feel pretty at home with this car. I need to get the thing smogged and I want to button down all the items that could be problematic before I show up. I replaced the fuel filter today (interesting that its the same exact filter used in my VW.. so is the oil filter!). It stalls out the first time you start it, but the second time it starts fine. Idle is a bit rough, as if it's missing. I checked the voltage coming out of the 02 sensor and it does fluctuate, but it only reads .07 volts.. maybe .2 max at certain rpms. I checked on my VW and it reads between .2 and .8 so I think it needs replacement. I picked up a Bosch Mustang 5.0 sensor and I plan on splicing that in tomorrow.

I'm curious about the fuel cap. I was surpised to see the fuel cap on the 190e is similar to the metal one on my diesel (diesels are smog exempt in CA). I know in CA smog they hook your cap up to a machine and make sure its working correctly (evap?) and can fail you for that. this cap looks pretty low tech.. will it pass smog?

Do they take your cap off and hook it up to a machine and test it?

Good to know. I'll just change my o2 sensor tomorrow and take it to a shop and see how it goes.

Anyone have any ideas on the starting issue? Without fail, the first time you start it it'll turn off immediately, then the 2nd time it's fine. It happens regardless if its cold or hot.
