Radio volume low

Well, here is another sound system post. Here goes. I recently bought a 1993 190e. One of the problems was that the radio was non-functional. I secured an identical e-bay unit and installed it. I also noticed that the front speakers were bad and I installed 2 new Alpine 2-ways. Rear speakers seem fine. The new speakers are 4 ohms. The new radio works but the sound level has to be full to make it heard. The fader does control front to back. The sound out of the rears is weak as well.

I just want the system to play my Ipod through a cassette adapter so incredible volume and clarity is not required, but I want more. What was the ohm rating of the original speakers? They were not marked as such. What other things could be causing the volume problem?

Loudness glitches on the factory sound system can come from many sources. One is that the volume control knob may be damaged. Jiggle it to see whether the rheostat makes contact again.

Also, there is a power amplifier inside the trunk up near the gas inlet. Peal away the back right corner carpeting to see it. It disconnects with a slider and two bolts hold it onto the frame. Remember that the drivers (the cones) don't last long and the wiring can get corroded over time. The fader/amplifier arrangement was poorly executed and the life of the system is quite short.

Good luck.

Well, I jiggled to no avail. I was lead to believe that the amp in the back is only for the "Active Bass" system. Is this not so? I think that a new fader might be in order. What thinks thou?
