Hey Eric - I can understand your interest. My buddy and co-worker bought a 1992Mk2 GTI awhile back. Lots of work to do but to my mind definitely worth it. Good VW Mk2s are rare, especially here in SoCal. Awhile back I looked around for a Mk2 GTI 16 valve (2 litre). Found one in Florida and one in Mississippi state...Jettas should be a much easier find but personally I am not into them that much.
Mk3s are not as good quality wise, funky electronics. You should never pay more than US 2,750 for a good clean drivable used Mk2 GTI.

I had 3 Mk2s - a basic 1.6 in the early nineties (it was unbreakable), a TD 80HP and that souped up 1.8 on the picture. All MK3s (4 of them) were TDs or TDIs. Great pulling power but more troublesome.
