any old merc, or old car for that matter can a high chance of being junk, if u want more of some muscle under the hood
get a straight 6 2.6 litre merc or one of the evos, 16v 2.3 litre, something like that stay away from just the standard 190e unless u plan to drop a turbo or twin turbo in it staight away, also remember the price you pay is pretty much what you get,
just make sure u get hte car checked out before u buy it , i personally got a good deal for my merc
6000AUD, its valuved at at least 9Kaud but i never want to sell it, because its immaculate interior and exterior
apart from 3 dash cracks and a few scratches on the paint but thats recent from stone chips,

JUNK???I've been told they are for years. But i was thinking that maybe they just didn't get well taken care of being a lower dollar car???
Pretty good cars actually...but I don't know what you mean by a low dollar car???
The MSRP on my '93 190E 2.3 was $31,255.00...if you compare that to the MSRP on 2007 C230 models, those would really be low dollar cars in today's money.
Going by your user name, I suspect that you have a 1982 240D, which is exactly what my 190 replaced due to the 240D being totaled. I would buy a new 240D today if MB still produced them, but those days are gone. Everything is high tech., over engineered, and designed to be repaired by the dealer.
You have a right to your opinion, but you might strike a few nerves posting those comments on the W201 forum. We're just trying to help each other keep our cars in good safe running condition and maybe a few mods. Look at some of the photos that fellow members have posted...some really nice looking cars.

Yeah RIGHT. My 22 year old car can whip damn near every piece of rice and crap that i see in my town. No to mention KBB shows my car valued at hrmmm...13k
Any car can be complete shit, depending who the owner is.
You wont find a lot of shit cars on this forum though. So its pointless to ask us how we feel about the w201. Sure they have some issues. But you find me a car in the age range of 15-25 years that is in perfect condition and will last you over 300k miles.
I can get these cars for dirt cheap money at auto auctions,i've bought and sold a few but never spent any REAL time with them.Last year i bought a MINT "91 300E in ATL with 117K for $1,200- and sold it to a friend for $4K.Shoulda kept it .

No, they're fantastic cars.
Sure they look sorta 'boxy' and they're not particularly comfortable on a long ride but that doesn't really matter does it ?
If nursed by a very carefull owner they can reputedly clock-up a very impressive number of miles despite a few known mechanical weaknesses such as transmission problems and cylinder head leaks. Electrical switches are prone to falling apart and door locks can magically stop working for no apparent reason but it is probably vacuum leaks which are their greatest downfall.
The interior trim is pretty durable, except for the seats and door panels, and the bodywork doesn't tend to suffer from corrosion much except around the jacking points.
Alltogether an excellent car !
Mine has now covered 30,000 miles from new and only needs a new cylinder head and differential to get it running again.
