Volvo had their boxy 240 in the 80s (oh yes and the crappy 340/360 with those Dutch (DAF) underpinnings and Renault engine), Bimmer 3 series was more sporty, but how many of those do you see driving around in good condition? My wife had one (325i), lots and lots of trouble.
Around here, both the Volvo and the BMW sold in larger numbers than the 190E which was, unfortunately, perceived by many as an 'old man's car'. BMW had the sporty image like you say and that appealed to the young executives. Volvo had the 'safe and practical' image which appealed to families. This seems to have left the 190E a bit 'out in the cold'. Probably every bit as safe and practical as the Volvo and, in some variants, just as sporty as the BMW, but potential buyers just didn't give it a second look.
Have to agree that the big Volvo was nothing much to look at, but it did save my life once. Hit in the rear by a Ford at speed and shunted into another Ford in front of me. The Volvo had some broken lights and small dents, both Fords were undrivable.
The 1.4 and 1.7 engine in the Volvo 340 was a PRV design - a company jointly owned by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo. It was made in the factory in Holland which used to make Daf but I can't say I saw any mechanical similarity. Again, horrible to look at but quite a good driving car. The gearbox was at the rar near the back axle and fuel tank under the rear seat so the weight distribution was better than most other cars at the time. The 360 with the 2.0 engine was a pretty good car - I wish I had one now !

1.8 litres of blazing German horsepower !
Who says oil and water don't mix ? Mine do !
Kepla, I get your point on the Volvo. They're built like tanks - our third car is a 1980 240GL, night blue. It's kind of a "family treasure", my inlaws and us "swap" it regularly. Agreed, everybody is afraid of me when I drive it on the Freeway, no cutting off, no aggression whatsoever. In the Netherlands (where I lived till 2003) the 190 used to be very popular with contractors. 80% of them were 190D 2.0, of course in white, with a hitch and the mandatory cement mixer as a tow. Until the cheaper Hyundai panel vans came around.... nowadays most of the guys driving 190's back in NL are of Turkish or Morroccan descent. Specifics? Lowered, huge decals, spoiler kits and of course a high output sound system)
Get you 1.8 fixed or stop posting and whining that its a bad car, if you can't afford to get it fixed or get rid of it then boohoo whose bad decision was that, not mine
But if it helps I'm willing to be your lightning rod so fire away and cut up my post out of context, maybe it will make you feel better about driving your pile of junk, I enjoy helping Mercedes owners anyway I can and glad to be of service lol

Yal, I cannot understand why you are insisting on being so very unpleasent.
The money I spent on suspension and brakes earlier this year would have been considered to be a 'good decision' by, I am sure, most people based on the fact that the car has only covered thirty thousand miles and has a complete and very detailled service history.
If we take on-board the general assertion that it is an excellent car, and I am not suggesting that Mercedes do not have a reputation for excellent engineering, then the current major faults become very puzzling for a car which has only done thirty thousand carefully-driven and well-maintained miles. I would expect that either a leaky cylinder head or worn-out differential would surprise anyone at that mileage on just about any car with the mileage, let alone a Mercedes ! Having both occur around the same time is, I'd say, a one-in-ten-billion chance of bad luck.
There are a few words which are frequently used to describe someone who gets amusment from other's misfortune, butI would rather not use them in a public forum.
You profess to enjoying helping Mercedes owners but nothing you have contributed to the conversation thus far supports that. Describing a car which obviously has had a lot of attention and money put towards it as a 'pile of junk' doesn't exactly help much, either.
From the general mocking tone of your posts it appears that you are behaving in the manner of, what is often termed, a 'troll'.

I need a benz bad........
btw w201 are very nice, better than any new benz in my oppinion the new ones have no class they look like toyotas or lexus cough shit cough, w201 is comfy, very energy efficient, and fun not to mention reliable. just because you see some lemon w201s doesnt mean its a bad make, some of the thousands produced will have retardations in them such as bad cylinder heads after 30k . Blows the doors off any saab or vw dont even bring those up please, vws are good for the junkyard.
my advice to anyone wanting to buy one, get a broken in one one with more than 80k miles and less than 150k if possible, get checks on them if they are in good shape then get it it will most likely last a while
other than that the absolute best in class and comfort with all electrical luxeries possible would be the 560sel, i had a nice one and it was traded it for my 190e sportline which i do not regret, i do miss it now and then.
all in all 190's are great cars, the MB company didn't dump 600 million into research and development for nothing, this car was on the top 10 best mb ever made list i saw on msn, it was number 10. thats when i decided to give it a try
MK2 VWs were the best cars EVER made. Why can't everyone just get it? I guess 190s are OK too.
Second that. Golf MK II forever.
One day, when my dear wife is sick of her Audi, I will buy her a 1992 Wolfsburg Edition 16V or a G60. Any color will do.
