Exclamation I need help many say in more ways than this

Hi I am so glad to be able to post with you I have been to other fourms not 1 person has got back with me to help or tell me to buzz off it looks like you really want to help each other. Thanks. This is my very 1st ever Mercedes-Benz and it is a 1984 190e I had 2 problems now I only have one the 1st was a clutch problem it only needed to be blead that is done clutch works great now the 2nd on I am working on is the car will start idle for about 30 sec then die but if I remove the top of the air cleaner and ever so slightly move the air flow flap the car will run forever and rev up all the good stuff but if I let it come back to idle with out the air flow flap moved so very little it dies. I have bought manuals both haynes and chilton both don't say to much about the idle system both say the comp controls the idle I thought it may be the cold start system so I let it run with the flapper mover unitl the fan came on and the car was up to temp but it was the same thing. I went on ebay and found a Mercedes-Benz factory maintance manual is this the manual I need to diag the idle system I have looked for a vac leak but its been very cold here could not stay out more than 1 hr at a time am I over looking something? Sorry for the long post I really like the car I just need a little help Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I think you may be on the right track looking for an air leak. You will find the bottom half of the air flow meter is made from rubber. On the bottom of this rubber section is a pipe about 30mm (half inch) diameter. My guess would be this pipe has dropped off. From memory this pipe comes from the idle air valve so not only would you have an air leak but the idle valve is unable to compensate for it.

You may also find the lower rubber section of the air flow meter split. But this is less common.

Good luck

i dun know about the clutch but, the idle issue unless you have the tools its a lot of guess and check. the earlier 190e's had an adjustable iacv, adjust that and see how it does, make sure u mark the orig position. if not adjust the amm (using a hex key) turn the screw in the hole on the center of the air cleaner. whats the position of your distributor? you can retard and advance ur timing there. the screw should be about center. i say that you take apart your intake manifold and reseal the bottom of the air flow meter, the throttle, and the intake itself. this is a good time to clean the intake too.

More questions

Where can I find the engine number the local dealer says I will need it because my 190e is european. Great what does that mean to me. I called them to find the center bezel on my heater control asm he said I have push button controls I told him I don't think so and I told him what I have. I have 3 control knobs the center one controls were the air flow goes (I think) I need the bezel with the arrows on it. He has not called me back yet

What is your VIN number?

If it starts WDBDA its North American

If it starts WDB201 its European

The manual states the following:

Engine No. (190E: front left) and it has a picture of the car with an arrow pointing to the left as view from the front

For 190E 2.3 engine number is located front left.
