Hey just wondering what would happen if i tried putting my car in reverse while driving forward.
The evil thought comes to me a lot while driving and today i just had to ask. There must be some safeguard for both manuals and autos but can it fail??
There is a safeguard for manuals in that you can not accidentally slap it in reverse, not sure on the auto. I know on some cars if you addicently throw it up to reverse they tranny will just click because it sences you are going too fast. and will engage when you come to a stop.

I had that happen after my car stalled at about 5mph the first winter i had it.
It's my first car, and i just panicked and threw it in Park whilst rolling to a stop.
The most horrible loud clicking sound followed, but my mech didn't seem to think i'd damaged the Diff/Trans.
It's horrible when an Auto 190 stalls - all electrics cut out, the steering goes like lead and then you realise what a brake servo does...
So i know in a manual its impossible since the reverse isnt syncromesh however i am still curious as to what would happen if u tried it in an auto? and yes zazeem i dont intend to try it
i was going one time about 10 mph in a POS sebring and wasnt wearing my seatbelt and slammed it into park and the car just STOPPED and i smash my forehead into the steering wheel lol

LMAO. There is a difference between thinking and doing.....the latter usually involves pain.
The auto CANNOT select reverse whilst moving above a certain speed. (Can't remember exact speed.) Something to do with pressures in the box I think won't allow it to select reverse. However the gearbox inst supposed to be able to change down above maximum engine rpm but from personal experience it can and the back wheels locking up at 80mph is a frightening experience.
I've done it (accidently) while trying to parallel park quickly. The car was still rolling a little (less than 5 mph) and it just didn't let me put it into reverse. It let me go into N, but not reverse. It's happened to me a couple of times, actually. If I'm not at a complete stop, it doesn't let me shift it into reverse.
On the same subject, let's say I'm doing 50, and hit it down to 2... would it do the same lockout thing as it does shifting to reverse? I use the 3 and 2 as a sorta "step-tronic" transmission sometimes, and I'm always worried I might bump it down too far.
