Do you mean to say that when you flick the key to "start", all the motor does is just spins and spin with no start?

does the engine sound different when u try to start it? sounds like u mite have a broken timing chain. i had a few belts break on me but never a chain. if thats the case its time for a new head or engine. pop off the oil cap and see if the chain is still on the cam gear.

A broken timing chain on a 2.6 is highly unlikely.

If the chain was broken, then the aluminum pistons would slam into whichever open valves there are being held in place by the stationary camshaft.

He did not mention any striking noises from the motor.

if the chain is broken the motor "sounds" cuz only the crank spins. when it happens alot of people dont notice the difference in sounds.

I am going to say that if all ignition parts check out ok, that means pulling the distributor and rotor and checking if that is still intact, checking the spark plug wires and checking for spark, then I would check and replace the crankshaft position sensor.

A cranking motor smelling of gas OUT OF THE EXHAUST PIPE means that your engine's not getting spark. Open up the distributor cap and see what's happening there. The cap is ceramic, and should clean easily with an abrasive cloth. Also clean the distributor rotor. After that, check your coil at a shop and then the ignition module which is mounted on the top of the driver's side wheel well inside the engine compartment.

A cranking motor with fuel coming OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT means a fuel leak. Check and replace any damaged fuel lines.

un plug the coil wire, and crank the engine. then remove and inspect the plugs and see if you smell gas. or if they are wet, if not you have a possible fuel distributor/ injector issue. if u havent already done that. fuel could be comiing to the engine jus not geting to the injectors

I bet it is the "Distributor Rotor Bracket", cost is $31.25. it is the bracket that the "Distributor Rotor" is attached to. Had one break on me, may not see if it is broken until you remove it, the cylindar part breaks with a hair line break, therefore the rotor does not turn. When I brought a new one, the parts person just looked under the counter to get a new one. It gets no lubrication, other than what you put on when new (Borsch makes lubrication).
