Your a champ, thank you for clearing this up!
Almost every 190E has had these 2 problems............& these two
problems should be the first things we should fix, because knowbody
likes hard shift & hard start.

time grow up and swap in a manual. Hard shifts? Only if you cant drive. hahah
Try looking at either the fuel pump or fuel pump relay, you should hear your fuel pump turn on when you have the ignition on(before start sequence).
Also look at the cold start valve, those seem to go bad as well, and make starts hard. You can also take the air cleaner assy off and clean the rubber seal around the air intake to the fuel distributor!
Guys, I appreciate the eagerness to help... but some of you have not read what I wrote it seams.
1) the car is a 5 speed manual, not an automatic.
2) the battery is BRAND NEW, after replacement to the new one... symptoms have NOT changed.
The vacuum modulator seems to be something for the automatic transmission, right? If so... then it has nothing to do with my car.
I'm back to my original question

I've just started doing some work on LPG vans and what not. I have no clue about anything though... I'll ask around about conversion vehicles and starting issues.

But LPG! Cool!
Dan, in Europe... many cars are converted to LPG. The cost(after conversion) of LPG is roughly what one would pay in the US for gasoline per gallon. Gasoline is about $5 per gallon here... other places is much more.
A good read about the LPG system can be read on the manufacturer's site.... do a search on Landi Renzo.
Currently I'm running on gasoline... as I had a problem with the LPG and need to have it checked out. Apparently the filter for the LPG went and it also busted a rubber O-ring under the fuel injector (due to pressure and age of the O-ring).. and the O-ring is currently fixed with silicone.
I'm not sure if the LPG has anythign to do with hard start as the car is designed to START on gasoline and only kick into LPG once I push the small hidden LPG button and the engine revs to over 2000 rpm's. Until then, its gasoline.
Snibble check your coolant temp sensor. Someone posted the values for testing. If it is bad then the computer does not know to enrichen the mixture. Check that first.
Snibble, I sympathize with you since I have been battling a similar
experience on my 190E 2.3 for 20 years. Bought the car new in 1987. It never
started right from the beginning and has gotten worse this past year. Needs
to crank 15 - 20 times before it starts. Have had it in a Mercedes shop many times
without out results. Have replaced several parts, e.g., temp sensor, fuel pressure
stabilizer and reservoir, fuel pump check valve, new filter, checked relays, checked cold start relay, sparks, distributer, and many more. After starting, the car starts on the first turn and runs like new (until the next morning). I´m sorry
I can´t provide any advice and will be watching this thread. Seriously thinking
of sending to the junkyard but other than the poor starting the car runs and looks perfect. Good luck.

I think the nice gentlemna was wondeing about hard starts not hard shifts. I have symptoms of both so do keep us updated hyprr
I was wondering. :-)
I had the same 4-5 seconds crank time when cold, once warm it starts pretty quick.
IF you are lucky, check the fuse on top off the OVP module located behind the battery. It's BEHIND the battery and the fire wall. False compartment, just lift up the weather strip and pull the plastic door foward.
10 amp red fuse. It controls the cold start valve as well as many other things.
One indicator that is not so obvious,, does the Check Engine Light come on with the Key at Start? It should then go out after starting. I failed Smog because the they check to to see that the light is working. That's how after much reading around here my car starts better. I replaced the fuse, light now comes on as well. :-)
I have now also order a replacement OVP module as something made that fuse blow in the first place. It may just be weak or OK, who knows. I tried to find out HOW to test it but I couldn't.
Head Gasket repair in progress, next will be my hard shifting. Upon tear down I did find one bad Vacumn Hose going from right in front of the Fuel Injection left to a Y-fitting on the 25 mm Black Hard Rubber hose. That might be my leak so we will see after it runs again.
