Choosing a paint/body shop

I'm looking for a shop to paint my car in my area (Sussex Co. DE). I've had a few estamates ranging from $800 - $4000 for basically doing the same work prep, paint and clear. Besides checking out cars that the shop is working on or have finished, what do I look for, ask for, ask about etc. Usually I think you get what you pay for and would stay clear from the lower quotes but I got a good feeling from a woman (yes, a female bodyman) in the $1200-$1400 range. Also do you think I should keep or kill the 2 tone... Thanks

The most important sign is if they have a really clean, well ventilated, well ligted paint room. Though most paint shops have dedicated paint rooms, very very few of them are well ventilated. Most of the body man/woman can paint, but none of them can keep dirts from getting into the paint unless the paint room is clean. So don't take this point lightly, it's very important. Next is be sure to ask them how many layers of base coat they're willing to put on given the price quotes. The more they put on, the smoother/richer the color is going to be. I'll say put on a good 3 base coats (+at least 1 clear coat) will be great if you can for the price. But at lease 2. Finally, how much trims are they going to remove (vs. just tape off). The best paint job will be to remove all the detachable pieces and paint them individually. The clear coat is more likely to peel at the paint edges. Sorry, can't advise on the 2 tones, that's really up to your taste. Be sure to check inspect your paint afterward in the bright sunlight. Make sure there's no runny paint job (i.e. the paint was runny then dried).
