1985 190E 2.3L dies at any speed

Hi all,

This is my first Mercedes and I have found it extremely easy to work on. I have fixed many of the little things that were broke when I got it. The one problem that I can't seem to isolate is that it will die while you are driving along. It has always happened when it is warm, any speed or rpm, no coughing or sputtering, it will immediately try to restart but barely "catches" and then dies again, and will always start after 30-45 seconds and run fine until this happens again. It is a great running car and other than this problem, I am really happy with it.

I read many of the posts regarding the OVP and fuel pump relays and thought these might be the culprit. I checked all the contacts and cleaned them, no luck. I also rebuilt the upper wiring harness (yes, it did the same thing before and after - I have worked avionic wiring on aircraft so I believe I did a good job) because it was brittle and some wires were exposed.

Is there any way to verify the relay/s are bad? Can you temporarily hardwire them to check which one is causing the problem? Thanks for your help!

Jeff

I would have immediately said fuel pump relay or OVP relay. You can bridge out the fuel pump relay between terminal 30 and 87 with a fused link to make the fuel pump run continuously. I have never done this but I would assume you could do the same for the OVP relay. You may find that you have more than one output from the OVP relay so you may need to make a Y piece bridge or something. (fused of course.) I don't want to tell you how to suck eggs but bear in mind while the relays are out you will have no protectio that they offer. i.e fuel pump relay is also the rev limiter.
You may also want to check the distributor cap. Sometimes the centre electrode can stick when hot as they are spring mounted. More common on the 2.6 but you never know. Good luck and let us know what you find.
