Automatic Transmission Issues

Hello everyone, I'm new here, very interesting forum. Lots of Info and Pics. Here's my first question, that I'm sure it has been answered somewhere but didn't find it.

My father-in-law bought a few days ago a 1985 190E 2.3 Automatic, it needs a lot of repairs, you can consider this a project car. The engine is running fine, some things are needed, but the most important thing needed is to make the transmision to shift. The problem is that when you put it in D an start driving the car seems to be in the highest gear, you have to go down to 3 or 2 and the car shifts fine, very smooth. The problem is that we don't how if that is a problem with the transmision or something else, I read through some post and there seems to be a vacuum modulator in the transimsion, and a cable that needs to be adjusted in order to the car to shift properly, but the forums talked about cars that wouldn't shit up, from 1st to 2nd, etc. Does the same applies to our problem? This cable needs adjusment in order to the transmision to shift in the correct order?

The fluid is ok, some minor leak, but ok.

Sorry for my english, haven't practiced in a few years.

I had the same problem. The pressure cable will help the auto trans to shift at a higher RPM or lower RPM. It might help but the problem is the auto trans "fatigue".

My mechanic added a "stop leak" fluid (all the bottle) into the trans (less than $7.00!!!) . It took 2 to 3 days and the trans started to work normally and accordingly to my mechanic, my problem is solved!
