new member engine question

Hi all,

Just found benzworld... Looks like a great resource.

I have an 86 2.3-16v that has finally eaten its oil pump at 253K miles.

I pulled the front cover off and found minimal damage but I am having a little trouble putting it back together.

I had to buy a front cover from a 91 as the old style pump is no longer available. The timing chain guide on the drivers side of the engine had disintegrated so I am guessing at its replacement and orientation. My MB CD's don't have an illustration of this assembly showing the chain and guides in their correct postion with the updated front cover.

I am not sure I have the right guide and most of all the pins that it appears to mount on are only about two millimeters long. The guide is about 3 cm wide.

Is there anyone who knows how long the pins to mount this guide should be?

Is there anyone who has updated an 86' block to the newer style front cover before?

Thanks,

Mark

Thank you. I am spendig way too much time reading all the posts on this site.

I may have an answer. A friend of a friend is a 18 year dealer mechanic and he may be able to look at it and give me an answer tomorrow. It'll be great to drive it again!
