Hello guys, Im removing the head on my 190 E 4 cyl 8 valve. No luck. Everything is unbolted per the manual on MBBrain gears and i cant get any movement. Im jacking it, prying it, knocking it, and the entire engine moves. Im afraid im going to break the engine mounts. Anyone know anything not covered in 1-27 of Removal and installation of cylinder head? I would like to pull this puppy off tonight.
Edit: I got movement on the head but im still attatched on the intake somewhere near the firewall
It's a very hard bolt to access. There is a skinny bar that is bolted to the engine block and then angles up to support the intake. I suggest that you use a short 10" length of pipe with a socket wrench to create a short breaker bar.
is this the big "V" shaped bracket? if so i've removed the two bolts from the top to get it loose. i can see the cruise servo (little box with a movable arm going to the intake manifold) but i don't see and bracket attaching it to the head. the little bar is attached, yes, but there is no way that is holding the head to the block.
i can wiggle the head around prettu good, it comes off the block about 5-10mm with just wiggling, EXCEPT the rear intake side corner, which it doesn't appear to come up at all. there must be something attached back there i've over looked. SMOG pipe bracket? i think i can see it, but it doesn't even appear to be touching teh smog pipe (looks like a little tab, directly to the rear of the head).
This is the bolt im looking for. I've removed all bolts in the manual, looked it over and over. This bolt is not in the manual. I think this is it but I cant find it.
"lower timming cover as a wedge to pull on the pin.. it came out after nearly giving up Everything else was quick and to the note of the manual... except they left out 2 VERY important bolts to remove,, one is a bolt to a bracket that holds the smog divirter valve below the exhaust manifold... so I broke the bracket!!! not to bad since it don't move and is about wieghtless so not worried. THe other one that really PPPDDDD me off was they totally left out the cruise control in the manual and nearly broke a big bolt on the base of the manifold that connects to the support bracket for the cruise servo... It took me 2 hours to figure out why the hell the intake side was not comming up with the head when i was lifting it with the hoist.. PAIN... after discovering it, I was beyond pissed.. cause i had bent the bracket and made for a bitch to get the bolt out.. "
I know this is an old Thread but I was searching here for a way to get this rear bracket off that broke in the above post. It holds the steel tube running from the EGR Valve as it goes to under side of the intake manifold directly under the butterfly.
Removing the 13 mm nut off the stud is not the problem, thats easy. It's the tube side clamp nut which is aims down with very little room. I can touch it but that is about it. The Bracket is stout enough where bending is a problem as well. I don't see any way so far to get to it and that includes from the bottom. If it was bolted rather than sitting on a Stud it might be easier, oh well.
For those attempting Head Gasket replacement on a 1992 190E/ 2.3 I wish you well. The manual leaves out just a few things. :-) To simply say remove the wiring harness,, mmm Broke a couple of plastic connectors and since I am choosing to remove the intake then pull the Head with the exhaust manifold I am pulling off way more than met the eye going in. It all has to come off the head any way if the head is going in shop.
The other bolt for the cruise control bracket is at the rear of the intake, just look over the back.
I just hope gaskets for the top intake to the bottom intake are in the kit. I didn't think one needed to split the intake.
Stuff to Buy plus your gasket set;
M55 Tork to 1/2 drive socket for the Head Bolts.
6 mm Allen to 3/8 drive unless you have very long allen wrenches.
Plastic Y- Hose going from the Air cleaner to the top of the intake and the rest of it. It will be hard and brittle and impossible to remove without breaking.
IF I find a way to loosen the bracket, I will come back and post.
