OK, here is a chance for some of you brilliant minds to show off. Please help diagnose this problem.
My '86 190E 2.3 starts as it should, runs for 1 or 2 seconds then dies. This an intermittent problem. When the car keeps running, it usually runs very smooth although sometimes, while driving, it will feel as though it's missing on a cylinder or two.
Plugs, wires, and distributor are relatively new. Injectors and air intake have been thoroughly cleaned. I was suspicious of the fuel pump relay but I jumped the terminals to bypass the relay and still had the same problem.
Because of the intermittent nature of the problem, I suspect an electrical issue. Perhaps a sensor is gradually wearing out.
I'd like to get a good diagnosis rather then just replacing possible defective parts. If anyone has thoughts about possible causes of these symptoms, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, I'm going to have to concede defeat and take it to a mechanic.
