My parents have a 1991 190E 2.3 sitting in the garage for quite a long time (> 1 year). They don't want it anymore (they have a E320) and gave it to me as a gift. Now I have to figure out how to get it working again.
1. The car doesn't start, probably because the battery is discharged. Should I replace it or try to recharge it (purchase a battery charger)? What is a good (and cheap) replacement? The one I have now is an Interstate MTP-91 and was purchased back in 2002.
2. Air conditioning doesn't work. There's air coming out from the vent but you can't control the speed and the temp. It seems like the climate control panel isn't working. The panel has been replaced before though so I'm not sure if it's the same problem.
3. Radio isn't working. The stereo unit turns on but the sound is muffled. No sound coming out from the front speakers and the rear speakers only produce noise.
The 190E has been our family car since 1991 and I hate to see it go. But I don't want to spend a whole lot on it because my parents already spent over $10,000 in the last couple of years fixing it.
1. buy a new battery
2. find the A/C fillpoint valve, looks like a tyre valve, take cap off and give it a tiny press with a screwdriver to see if it still has gas in system, it should have lots of pressure, if not the gas has leaked out and it may be expensive to fix. also check A/C fuses.
3. check stereo balance, fader and tone control settings, you may also have a volume control dial in the center console, turn it up.
good luck, search for your fault fixes here and save your money, these are a good car to work on and most things are logical to fix
I've just replaced the battery. Now the baby just keeps cranking but does not start. At first I think it needs more fuel so I gave him some but still no luck. What can I do to troubleshoot? Thanks!
If it's been sitting for awhile, the fuel may have deteriorated. I forget what it's called, but ask the friendly folks at your local auto parts store for a product that you can dump into your fuel tank that will make the gas usable again.
I'd like to echo the fact that these cars are so great to work on, please don't give up on it. Come here for help, and search old threads. There's a wealth of information that spans thousands of posts and threads, and there's really no reason you should have to pay a mechanic mucho deniro to fix the car.
I've poured about 1/2 a gallon of 91 octane gas into the car but it's still cranking. I know there isn't much fuel left in the car before so the new gas I put in there should have diluted the old gas. Should I put in more gas?
I hate to let the car go too as it is a part of my family since 1991 (my parents were the first-hand owner). But I can't afford to put too much money into the car.
Thank you again!

If the car is cranking it might be an issue with the fuel, or plugs. I would take off the plugs and clean or replace, and same with the dist cap and rotor.
