A buddy of mine here in france has a '87 190E 2.0 which he got as a non runner, engine turns over, lots of spark but no fire.
He asked me to take a look as as I've recently aquired a 230E & it's very similar mechanically, I noticed right off that that the fuel pump didn't seem to be running, & I cracked the fuel unions at the engine to check, no fuel feed!
I've read on this board that it's probably the relay, where is it? how do I reconize it? & how do I check it?
The tank was also bone dry when he got the car, is there a failsafe to stop the pump running dry that needs resetting?
Any help appreciated.
Well, first fill it with fuel. Then put the key in the run position without turning it over and let it sit there for about 5 seconds while listening very carefully to see if you hear a slight humming sound -> the fuel pump. If you do, go ahead and try to start the car. If not, check the fuel pump relay, which is located behind the battery.
I've tested the relay from the 190 in my 230E & it seems to work, I've tested the main processer the same way, it works okay in my car too.
So I went underneath with a tester, no voltage when the ignition is switched on & about 8v when cranking.
This is really teeing me off,
Any ideas anyone?
It sounds like the fuel pump relay!
It's one of the relays next to the OVP relay.
Basically there's 2 relays that look exactly the same.
This should help you :

good luck,

Ta for that, I presume the relay is the one with a fuse built in the top?
Actually, no. That relay is the Over Voltage Protection (OVP) relay. The relay that you need is the Fuel Pump relay, which is black and rectangular. Check the website that hyprr1 suggested. It has a good description.
