Overheating

Hi everyone,
To start with where is automatic fan switch in 190E models.[?]
I have a mercedez benz 190E with 260E Engine, I live in Nigeria, for some times now my car have been having serious overheating problem up to 120. This always happen whenever the car is idle, at most 10 minutes in traffic there will be no more water in the radiator. I have tried the best among the local mechanics in my area non seems to have solution. I have changed water pump, radiator, and a lot of things but no improvement. I read through some similar overheating problem but they are child play compare to mine.

RE: Overheating

Well, if you're losing all your water, it sounds like you might have a leak. Check your recirculator pump, these have a tendency to fail. The thermostat might also have problems, so replacing it would be a good idea.

RE: Overheating

I HAD THE SAME OVERHEATING PROBLEM,
1) YOU SAID THAT YOU ALREADY CHANGE A FEW PARTS.

YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE FOLLOWING;
IF THE TEMPERATURE REACH 120 THE BOTH AC AUXILIARY FAN MUST TURN ON, IF THEY ARE NOT, CHECK YOUR TEMP SENSOR, THE ONE THAT ACTIVATE THE AC FAN. IT IS LOCATED CLOSE TO THE COLD START VALVE , AND IT HAS TWO POLE BLUE COLOR.
IF BOTH AC FAN TURNS ON THEN MAKE SURE THE RUN ON THE HIGH SPEED. 190 2.6 HAS TWO RELAY; ONE TO RUN THE AC FAN AT LOW SPEED, AND ANOTHER RELAY TO RUN THE AC FAN AT HIGH SPEED.
IF THE RUN ON HIGH SPEED WHILE THE TEMP REACH 120, THAT IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM.
THEN; I WILL DESCRIBE YOU HOW I FIXED MY OVERHEATING PROBLEM;
SINCE THE 190 2.6 COOLING SYSTEM WORK BY PRESSURE, THE $ 7.00 DOLLAR CAP OF THE COOLANT CONTAINER WAS NOT CREATING THE PRESSURE ENOUGH, THE COOLANT WAS LEAKING BY THE OVERFLOW HOSE.
AFTER ALL I FOUND THE ANSWER IN THIS GREAT FORUM, ALREADY PASSED THREE MONTHS , AND MY CAR IS OK

RE: Overheating

If the car overheats ONLY when it is stopped in traffic then that sounds like the fan is not working. May just be the fan switch.

However, If you have no water at all in radiator there must be a leak and if there is no water in the system then the fan switch would not "know" the temperature and would not get switched on by the temp sensor switch.

Fill the coolant system up and make sure to sqeeze both the hoses at the radiator that go into the water pump to get rid of any air bubbles. Then start the car and let it heat up and watch for any signs of water and steam coming out and you should find the leak. Give the water pump pully a feel and see if there is play in the bearing then if so the seal could be leaking.

If the fan does not go on when the engine gets to about 100C then it must be the fan or switch.

RE: Overheating

You have a 190E 2.6.
The main fan is a clutch fan. The clutch is probably not locking up and is probably bad. The clutch only locks up when the heat is high. To test let the car heat up to about 105. Turn the engine off then try and spin the fan. It should be tight to spin if it is not then you need a new clutch.
If the main fan is ok then you need to test the auxiliary plastic fan(s) by jumping the aux fan switch. Its a blue switch somewhere near the back of the head.
