190E AMG?

As some of you know, I am interrested in a Mercedes 190E. However, I do not know tons about these cars. What exactly is a Mercedes AMG model? Also, I've heard of "mini 190E AMG"s. What are these like? Is it just as easy to find parts for these? What are the mini-Benz price of parts in comparison to a normal 190E? Any other differences?

Before AMG was purchased by Daimler-Benz, they were the first Mercedes "tuner." AMG provided modification services to willing Mercedes customers, but had no formal factory relationship. Modifications centered around the engine, suspension, body aerodynamics, wheels and interior.

The confusion over the AMG modifications comes from the fact that tuning was a purely customer specified purchase. At AMG's headquarters in Affalterbach and in the authorized centers around the world, modificatons were ala carte, not packaged or complete. With authorized centers doing many of the conversions in North America, Canada, Japan, and throughout Europe, there are no unified records of work was done.

You are probabl referring to the "Baby Hammer" which was a W201 fitted with a modified M103 2.6L engine enlarged to 3.2L and had peformace specs that made it a virtual 4 door Porsche 911S.

For the other W201s, there were essentially two different body styles, the wide body, with fender flares in front and back and the non-wide body.

Very hard.

The AMG parts are not really in stock anymore. As a result, parts are either "old stock" or used. There were not many 3.2L models sold in the US.

Any other differences?
AMG modified engines had different cams, exhaust systems and ported intakes. The HP increase was mainly felt at the upper end of the rev range, sacrificing low end torque. The more radical changes came with the 3.2L modifications.

The suspsension was lowered beyond that of the 16 valve and Sportline, with thicker sway bars, lowering springs and sport struts/shocks.

AMG bodykits are built from polyurethane, not fiberglass and are distinguishable by their ability to flex.

RE: 190E AMG?

The parts of the AMG 3.2 engine that don't start with HWA are: v-belt, motor mounts, crankshaft (A 104), oil cooler fitting, oil cooler lines, and oil cooler (attaches to existing oil filter mount). The dipstick is an HWA part.

RE: 190E AMG?

As noted by Pawsh, just try to get a US (MBUSA) parts department to locate a HWA (Han Werner Aufrect) part number for a W123, 126, 124 or 201 . . . according to their systems, it doesn't exist since they only go thru MBUSA. You have to go thru Daimler-Chrysler AG (Germany) to have a chance to source replacment parts.

RE: 190E AMG?

The suspension on the other hand is different. Its a mix of 201, 124, and HWA part numbers. For instance, the front spindles, lower control arms, and hubs are all 124 part numbers. These are also available through online parts sources.

RE: 190E AMG?

Hello guys!
In my european EPC (spare parts cat.) AMG parts are listed for the things I have checked. As mentioned above; crank- and camshaft, intake, sport exhaust system etc. Some are std W124 parts, and some have the longer AMG spare part number.
As far as I know, and what is stated in the EPC, the suspension is identical to the 190E 2.6 Sportline eurospec...

I guess you will achieve similar performance with the 3,0 or 3,2 M104 engine... To a lower cost...

RE: 190E AMG?

The AMG coil springs from my 84 are much shorter than the Sportlines and the front and rear swaybars are much bigger than the Sportlines as well, so the later models may not be as aggressive.
