Hi Everyone:
I'm new to the board and have just recently picked up a 1987 190E. My question is I plan to do some of the maintenance myself but dont have a repair manual. Can someone tell me which manual I should be using and where can I get one??
Thanks in Advance
It's spelled Haynes. The most current edition covers the 2.3L M102 four cylinder and the 2.6L M103 six.
Does it? Which version is this? I couldn't find it on the Haynes website or Amazon.
Now, the Haynes manual is (AFAIK) only available for the 2.3 in North America. There was a place that had the Haynes 2.6 manual, but that was for the UK model, which is right-hand drive and my spatial processes are not good enough to mirror-image my vision :).
What I'm looking for is a repair manual of Haynes-like quality for a 1988 190E 2.6 in North America. Any ideas?
And how useful is a Haynes manual? I am a car newbie, live in an apartment (no garage) and don't have many tools. Yet, I want to fix little things like the power window, power door lock, power antenna, etc. and other stuff that might go wrong. I don't think I'll be fooling with the engine much (at all).
My question is does the Haynes manual have troubleshooting info or does it just have removal and installation instructions??
The Haynes manuals are not "diagnostic" publication, although there are some generic advice in the introductions to each chapter. They are useful in teardown procedures and routine maintenace areas, such as brake service, cooling system service, but aren't useful for a/c or transmission issues.
Mercedes' Chassis and Engine service manuals are along the same lines, but there is a separate Maintenance publication and ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual)available for the W201, along with the HVAC and Transmission manuals.
Suprisingly, the W201 can be disassembled, almost 90% with handtools and the proper jacks and stands. A good metric socket set, torque wrench, extensions, allen wrenches and a few screwdrivers and wedges are all you need to work on the car.
