[:(] hey everyone, i own a 1988 gold 190E 2.0 automatic. the car has been running well for the last 5 years i've owned it. nowadays when i drive long distance or the car has really warmed up, and the car is idle (gear remaining in position 'D') the oil ressure seems to drop to below 1! it seems alarming. however when i hit the gas the pressurer rises to 3! when i switch from 'D' to 'N'the pressure increases to between 1 and 2. in the morning when the engine is cold the pressure shows a perfect 3. i have changed the oil, the filter and the timming chain. there is still no change. my foreman says that therer is nothing wrong with my car as if i hit the gas and the pressure increases, there shouldnt be a problem. on the other hand i fear that if the pressure hit '0', the car might stall. please help me out as i am really having a head ache with the car and my family is urging me to part with her. thank u in advance, dev...
When my car is within operating temperatures, in D at a stop light the oil pressure drops down to 1-1 and a half and then as I accelerate it goes to 3. Nothing seems alarming to me, it was always that way.

Because these cars have a lot of oil PSI at idle you are prob. alarmed because it used to idle at 2-3 ?
well as time the mileage goes up on the motor things that wear out tend to add up when you put them all together. Things like oil pump rotors, increased engine beering clearences, oil gumming up in the oil pump screen, and so on. these are all normal and some times more noticable on one car when compared to another.
If you don't hear noises like crankshaft or rods then you shouldn't be to worried.
At your next oil change you may wan't to try using a (strait 30 wht. or 20/50 wht. oil) and see if that improves it and if it does don't try 40 or 50 wht. that is to much, and of corse i'm assuming that your oil pressure sensor isn't speewing oil all over and giving a false reading.
And to top that off if say your engine used to idle ant 700rpm in gear and now its lower like by 100 rpm or so that will add to the affect.
Well I hope that gives you some kind of perspective on it and I hope you are using good oil.
[:(] as what was said, my rpm has dropped by 100rpm in gear. its is very alarming. do you think i should overhaul the engine? as long asa the car doesnt leave me stranded, its fine with me.
tc, dev
It sounds like you took that rpm drop to mean that the motor is in trouble. I just ment if its getting a bit old and the oil psi is a bit less at idle it will show even more if for (SOME OTHER RESON) the idle is lower.
So if you place your foot softly on the gas pedel and bring the in gear idle speed up to the speed it used to be at, does the oil presure also go up to where you are used to seeing it?
But anyway the miles wouldn't have affect on idle speed so maybe you just need to have CIS system diagnosed to se why idle speed is lower. It may be no big deal. mixture adj, sensor, etc.
the minute i touch the accelerator, the rpm goes up (NORMAL) and the oil pressure does too. hoever in the morning start up the pressure is at a level of 3. then it starts to drop. i have taken it for a CIS diagnostic check and it states that everything is fine. i am wondering whether the vacuum pump has gone faulty. i am also wondering whether the oil pressure sensor is fine. i am currently using non synthetic motor oil. may mechanic is suggesting an overhaul. this really alarms me.
Just stay on a normal oil change interval and live with the oil pressure guage. Mine does the same thing. Posibly changing the oil pressure sensor might improve the level on the dash guage, maybe not. I bought my car with 66,000 miles on it and the guage would drop just below 3. Now at 153,000 miles it will drop to 1.5 after a long trip. I,m sure if these cars had a throttle plate adjustment so you could increase the idle 1-200 rpm's, the oil pressure would increase too. My car idles low when in drive and when I put it in neutral the oil pressure rises with the rpm,s...seems normal to me.
Yes what he said. If there is no obvouse problem with the CIS then I would have the adle speed adjusted.
You will always with any engine have more oil presure when you first start the car because the oil is cold and thicker. Sence the gauge tops out at 3 bar for all you know it used to have 4.5 bars when cold and now it has 3.1 So Just get CIS adjusted when it was checked there are Idle speed ranges that are within the norm. say the book calles for 700 rpm its 700 rpm (+or- 50 rpm) so the mechanics may be rite you could just be at the bottom of the given rpm range now.
Sense I don't know who your mechanic is I can say that if someone told a friend of mine what your guy told you I would suggest they get a new mechanic.
Now if he said you have a rod knocking or noisy crank beerings then that would be different.
Not that having a fresh rebiuld would be bad for any car if the mileage is high, but your car has a history of running very high miles and even if it started to make some distinctive noises would prob. still go another 20k.
If it would make you sleep better try to get a second opinion from someone that doesn't stand to gain anything by selling you a 6-8,000.00 rebiuld wich by the way is prob. the value of the car unless it is ireplacable to you.
I just viewed you other post yes your milage is high but how old is the motor.
Sounds like you have a running issue and need to get it checked out by someone who works with bosche systems. If it turns out to be some thing very expensive you could get another one with 1/2 that milage.
my car does have a high milage indeed but i have done a complete overhaul about 50,000kms ago. it should give me anymore headache now.but it is. anyway, i thought of cleaning the throttle body and changing the fuel pump relay to see if it helps.
