The 190E has a "Flewxible couping" which is made of rubber, I would check that first, by jack up the rear and look for signs of damage such as cracking or splitting or for signs of general deterioration. To replace it you are going to have to remove exhaust system heatshield, remove the support bracket which is fitted across the propeller shaft, you are going to have to place jack with a block of wood underneath the transmission to support it and etc. The Haynes service manual has a good write up of how to do it. You really need a alignment tool to do it right.

RE: Dirve Shaft, R&R

The shaft is a two piece unit so if you split it be sure to scrape a mark in both pieces so you put it back in the same place so its not out of ballance.

There is a Flex joint on the front and rear of the drive shaft. If one of them is defective, you're probably hearing a clunking noise when you put the car in gear. My front one went out first...you will be able to inspect the flex joints when you jack up the car. If a flex joint is bad you will see the rubber torn and shredded. Also, you will not need to remove the drive shaft completely to replace the flex joints, but you will have to remove some items to slide the drive shaft to remove and replace the flex disk.
While you're at it, I would suggest that you inspect your transmission shifter linkage bushings to see if they need replaced. They're cheap but hard to get to. I just replaced mine and had to lower the transmission to do it...just a thought.

Good Luck,

Dave
