I'm considering an '85 190E 2.3 16V. I'm planning on test driving it this weekend. The car has a about 110k miles on it. I understand it was imported from Europe-- i believed it has a stamp indicating this.
I've started to research this car a bit online. I've read lots of good reviews, and seen some really good comments from owners regarding this car. Some seem to think it's superior in some ways to later models.
Assuming the car is well-maintained, has only a bit of interior issues to deal with (a split seam on the driver's side seat and one in the back), what would one expect to pay for this car? I notice the book value of a "regular" 190E of the same year is pretty low.
Any other thoughts or feedback regarding this car would be appreciated.
I might be wrong, but didn't they only make the 2.3-16 in 86 and 87? Anyways, I have also been looking into getting one of these cars. From everything I've read, they're supposed to really great cars. Sorry for not really answering the question
Well i have the car you are talking about. Its way awesome. As long as the SLS is working fine and you will pass the emmisions tests you are ok with this car. My car has about 88000km on it now and its so smooth. Never game me any trouble except for a fuel pump relay which i replaced in 1 minutes time

I understand this is an imported European '85 190E-16. That would make sense, right? I think it was imported properly, as it's now registered in the US.
I'm driving a (non-Mercedes) car right now with 180k miles on it. For a really well built car, 120k miles doesn't seem like that much to me. Are there general problems that tend to go wrong around that many miles? I'm also a little hesitant buying a car even older than what i have, but everything i've read has got me really interested.
If all goes as planned, i'll be taking a look at it Sunday. Any other thoughts appreciated!
First, the 2.3-16 will not be the best "daily driver" since the engine is really designed for winding up the revs and for some, the "dogleg" 1st gear on the Getrag takes some getting used to. The parts are getting more expensive and some are pretty much "not available" anymore, so you really want to resist the temptation to put a lot of miles on it.
Second, have the car inspected throughly and try to get a confirmed listing of how many previous owners it has had. The fewer the better, since most, not all, but most 2.3-16's have been thrashed by subsequent owners and given the cost of proper maintenance, that was usually not regularly or properly done.
