Eh? The W201 wasn't sold, in Germany, till 1983 (announced Dec '82). Airbags were first offered as optional equipment in 1984, then standard equipment from 1986. In 1992, Mercedes made airbags standard in all its passenger car lines.

I realise that aibags have been standard equipment in the US for many years (due to a reluctance to wear seat belts). Here in Australia where the wearing of seat belts has been compulsory for decades, airbags have only more recently become standard fitment (and only very recently become compulsory on new cars). MB offered them here as an option from the early '80s but they did not become standard until much later. The W124 only got a standard driver's side airbag here in about '92-'93 and the passenger airbag was still optional. An airbag is a very rare sight on a W201 here and I don't believe it was ever offered as standard. Neither my 190E or 300TE (both '90 models) have airbags. Just another example of the many differences between MBs for different markets.
