My 1985 190E 2.3 (160K +) stalls when the engine is warm and it is put in gear, reverse especially. This just started happening recently. It starts up again immediately, and it does not happen when the car is cold.
I have replaced the distributor cap and plugs; replaced the coolant sensor to the fuel injection; the kickdown relay (behind the battery); adjusted the transmission pressure control; replaced the switch for the electro-magnetic fan; advanced the timing and even adjusted the idle and most recently the relay for the auxilary fan. The relay seemed to help the most, but it still will stall, although not every time like it used to.
It happens when the engine temp is about 100 degrees C, or more...and the car is shifted into gear..there is a critical moment just as it engages when the idle drops to about 500... and oftentimes just stalls. If it gets past that critical moment...it will idle just above 600 rpm in gear with my foot on brake. Its a 50-50 shot if it will get past that critical moment however.
The electro-magnetic fan comes on at 110 degrees and drops the engine temp back to 100. is that the correct operating range?
I have yet to see the auxiliary fan come on. I do not have the owners manual, so I dont know what fuses are involved here possibly. any help on that is appreciated.
Also, and I dont know it this is related, the external temp readout on the dash wiorks intermittently... usualyy fklashes on for abrief second when I first turn the key then shuts off. every once in a while I notice that it does give a readout.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I have another mercedes enthusiast (far more knowledgable than I) advising me, but we have been unable to resolve this. thanks in advance.
by "idle control valve"... do you mean the throttle valve housing that is located below the airflow sensor unit and air filter?
I am assuming that is what you mean... but just wanted to be sure. I have applied some WD 40 there, and there does seem to be some improvement. Is ther another unit to be cleaned also?
blackbenz:
if the idle air control valve that teky refers to is what my Haynes Manual refers to as the throttle valve housing, then it is located under the air cleaner assembly. Get a copy of the haynes manual for the 190E (about 16 bucks at AutoZone or similar auto parts store). Pics and diagrams in there for you.
Teky, I did clean the throttle valve housing and the air flow sensor unit with WD40 last night, and it seemed to help. I sprayed the hell out of it again this aftenoon with Berryman's Chemtrol Carb Cleaner, while revving the motor. That has definitely helped immensely, but its still not quite 100%. Instead of stalling EVERY time I put it in reverse, it now only does it mebbe once in 20 attempts. Big improvement though. I will continue to do that...and welcome any other thoughts you may have.
