Help!! Emissions Check

I marginally failed the emissions inspection on NOx. The cause can be carbon build up or a faulty EGR. I called 2 MB parts dealers, they were quoting prices in the $380 to $450.

Has anyone replaced the EGR valve or know where it's located on a 1987 190E 2.3?

Don't pay me much attention, but if I remember well, it could be located inside the left wheel cover. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply ... that's an odd place for an egr valve. It's usually by the intake manifold but I don't see it there.

Had snow today so I will take a look at the wheelwell this weekend.

Removed the aircleaner assembly and looked again on the left side and don't see anything that resembles an egr valve.

I almost think there's no egr valve on this engine ('87 190e 2.3) BUT the MB parts dept quoted me a ridiculous price for one and Internet sites also list it but not one has a picture of this part for the 2.3 engine.

Confused .. need to check it since I failed the emission test on NOx.

Well, that’s why he quoted you an insane price: the 2.3 L engine did not have an EGR until 1991, and they are ALL on the manifold.

The EGR valve is located on the exhaust manifold. If you noticed while searching the these online sources they list an engine number range (10 036977; 12 081514), this is when they started to install the EGR valves on the 2.3-8s.

Thanks for the sanity check. Without an egr, where do I check for carbon buildup. The NOx level was slightly high (219 actual and 200 allowed).
