I have 1989 190E 2.6 with 120K miles. My problems began about 2 weeks ago when the car started stalling upon slowing down. This would happen about once every few days. I installed new spark plugs and observed no improvement. After a few days, the problem became worse and more frequent. It began stalling on the freeway at 70mph! After stopping and restarting..it would fire right up. This would happen once or twice a day.
Then I noticed that if it stalled at highway speed and I do nothing or sort of let it "glide" for a little time (maybe 10-15 seconds) the engine would start on it's own. I began getting used to this then one day (last Friday) it stalled three times on my way to work (35 miles away) and twice back. I made it home. Later that evening, I tried to start the car and it would NOT kick in. I have been unable to start this baby since then and it is sitting in our parking lot.
I have a friend mechanic (45 miles away) who can fix the car. Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out where the problem is eminating from. A few people have suggested the following: (a) fuel pump, (b) fuel filter, and (c) Fuel pump relay.
If it is something simple like a fuel pump relay then I can possibly fix that myself. No?
Can anyone shed some light on what the problem might be?
I have a similar problem...
Background:
About a year ago, my alternator died while i was driving. Having made it right to the driveway... the engine stalled (while facing uphill), pushing was a real bitch not to mention embarassing.
When I purchased my 2.6 in '98, it had a leaky head gasket. Also the ABS light came on after a bump was hit in the road....
Currently, since the changing of the alternator, the ABS light isn't on as much as it used to be BUT when the light turns on, there seems to be a power drain. And when I come to a stoplight, the car giggles a bit as the RPM's hover just above 500. Now at night, the headlights are on... I have the Euro lights installed. So now when i come to a red light with the abs off and the headlights on the engine really just wants to stop. I Sometimes find myself putting the trans in neutral and reving the car till it turns green then slaming it into gear. But stalling still happens every so often. I hope that this won't turn into your more serious stalling on the highway... But my thinking is that there is a power fault somewhere that is drawing energy away from the abs... according to the manual, the abs will turn off when the voltage drops below a certian level. What's happens exactly i don't know....
I know someone who had the same problem with a w140
after he changed spark wires and distributor the problem was solved.
To bad your car wont start anymore, but when u have your friend around u can measure to power over the coil with a multimeter, and u can test a spark by taken it out and pressing the iron on an iron part of the engine.
Then u know of the problem is due to the ignition or not.
