Does anyone know if there is a difference in horsepower rating between the US and Euro versions? If so what is the horsepower and torque of these models? What other differences are there?
Also..
I have an 85 Euro 16v with about 100k on it. Are there some problems that I should watch out for or any preventive maintenance that should be done with this kind of mileage and age?
The euro versions made more HP (185 vs. 167) and torque (162 ft/lb vs. 177 ft/lb @4500-4700 rpm) via ignition timing, less restrictive exhaust, and the engine was allowed to rev higher than the US via a higher rpm "cutoff" in the fuel pump relay.
If you have a "grey market" 16 valve that was imported into North America from Europe, those performance numbers might have stayed in Europe since the importer would have been required to replace make the car comply with local standards, including swaping out the fuel pump relay, etc.
keep your eye on the ignition switch, if the key starts to get difficult to turn,i,e, you have to wiggle the steering wheel to turn it do not wait, get a new ignition barrel fitted asap!!! the insides collapse and then you cannot turn the barrel to the correct postition( no1)to remove the old one and install a new one. this causes major headaches and expence, much cheaper and easyer to be in front of it.
The fuel pump relay is located behind the battery/battery compartment. Check the part number with your dealership and see if it's the US part or the Euro part number. That should give you a clue if it was converted to US Spec. Are your headlights the US spec lights or the euro headlights?
BTW, there are two Euro-specs - LHD (Contential) and RHD (British/Irish) market. The RHD made LESS HP than the LHD due to a restructure of the exhaust manifold to clear the steering linkage!!
