I've been here before and you've been a great help so far, hope you could give me pointers on this problem as well.
As a recap, I have a '90 1.8 automatic 190E with 110K miles. So far I have:
- Replaced spark plugs
- Replaced air filter
- Replaced fuel filter
- Replaced oil and oil filter
The problem is as follows:
Starts fine, even on cold mornings, and as soon as it does, idle runs well for about 5-6 seconds and then dips dangerously. In most cases it recovers fine, but if I nudge the throttle before the dip, it will stall. If I leave it be, the idle dips then recovers, goes up to 1000rpm for a few seconds then settles at a respectable 700-800rpm while the engine warms up.
Next, after the car is warmed up and running fine, it will idle very roughly in D at stop lights. So rough actually that the tach dips down to 500rpm, and the oil gauge drops down to 2. When that happens, I can tell that one cylinder has gone off and it seems to be running on 3, if not 2. If I shift it into N or P and nudge the throttle, it purrs back to normal. If I leave it in D and drive off, it'll hesitate, and behave like it's lost one (or more cylinders). It then recovers and runs fine after a slow rolling start. It will do this regardless of outside temperature and regardless of how long its been driven. This problem never occurs while the car is being driven at any speed above 20mph, or as long as I don't stop.
I suspect it is the ignition leads but I need assurance. I do all the work on the car myself and would rather not bark up the wrong tree.
You posted your problem a couple of months ago and received no replies. I am experiencing the first part of your post and wondered if you were able to resolve it on your own.
THAT'S IT... THAT'S ALL THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS PROBLEM....
What the hell... I've had the same problem and no one knows anything about it, nor do they have any real GOOD advise to resolve it! Damnit, my 190E 2.6 is in the garage now... hopefully i'll be able to answer some of these questions myself...
Just a quicky, does your abs turn off as well and then the rpms drop off?

For those of you who give a shit... of course not including those whom have posted in this thread.... the stalling is caused by the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, over protection relay, and perhaps the engine may need a whole service done (ie tune-up but in MB language: service) This was estimated at $1200 to $1300 from my mechanic. Now where to get the parts and do this shit myself....
